The Miracle on South 13th Street: A Philadelphia Holiday Tradition That Gives Back

Every holiday season, one South Philadelphia block transforms into something truly special. Known far beyond the neighborhood, The Miracle on South 13th Street lights up the city with towering decorations, dazzling displays, and a spirit of generosity that captures the heart of the season.

What began as a neighborhood tradition has grown into a Philadelphia landmark — drawing families, visitors, and holiday lovers from across the region. Houses glow from sidewalk to rooftop, each display more elaborate than the last, turning a simple residential street into a must-see holiday destination.

But the Miracle on South 13th Street isn’t just about lights — it’s about giving back.

Lighting the Way for Kids in Need

This year, the holiday magic shines even brighter with the support of Bob Kelly and Kelly’s Kidz, in partnership with FOX 29. The event invites visitors to do more than admire the displays — it encourages them to help children who need it most during the holidays.

Families attending are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy or stuffed animal, benefiting children at local pediatric hospitals. It’s a simple act of kindness that turns a night of holiday fun into something truly meaningful.

A special toy collection event took place on Saturday, Dec. 13 on South 13th Street with donations to support children in local pediatric hospitals.

It’s a powerful reminder that the holidays are about more than decorations — they’re about compassion, community, and coming together for a greater cause.

A Familiar Face of the South Philly Holidays

Just a few blocks away, another South Philadelphia holiday tradition is unfolding — one led by a familiar face to many at Danbro.

Underneath I-95 at South Front Street and Washington Avenue, Rocky Powers, a longtime Danbro employee, welcomes families to his annual Christmas tree lot. With more than a decade of tree-selling experience, Rocky, “The King of Frasier Furs” has become part of the seasonal rhythm of the neighborhood, helping customers choose from fresh-cut Douglas firs, Canaan firs, and blue spruces brought in from western Pennsylvania.

Dressed in red and greeting customers with a smile, Rocky is often mistaken for Santa Claus himself — but those who know him understand that what he really delivers is connection. From first-time visitors to longtime regulars, families return year after year for the warmth, laughter, and sense of community he creates.

“Oh man, it’s really enjoyable making people happy for the holidays. We show a lot of love to our customers. You can come to my corner, get a glass of red or white wine, have a shot of Fireball or Apple Pie moonshine. We have the music going, we make it joyful to go out and buy a Christmas tree,” said Powers.

Built on Strong Foundations — At Work and at Home

At Danbro, we’re proud to have team members like Rocky who bring the same dedication to their communities that they bring to their work. The Miracle on South 13th Street and Rocky’s Christmas tree lot are reminders that the strongest traditions — like the strongest structures — are built on commitment, consistency, and care.

As the season unfolds, Danbro is proud to celebrate the lights, the giving, and the individuals who help make the holidays brighter — on the job and in the community. From all of us at Danbro, we wish you a joyful, meaningful holiday season filled with tradition, generosity, and strong foundations for the year ahead.
