Boston Museum of Fine Arts World Cup Yacht Display

The museum of Fine Arts in Boston, in conjunction with Rodger Martin Designs, needed to support two 100′ Yachts for an outdoor exhibit. The foundation supports needed to be as minimal as possible so as to not detract from the display.

Project Summary:

  • Helical Pile Type: 1 3/4″ Square Shaft transitioning to 3 1/2″ Pipe Pile
  • # of Helical Piles: 14
  • Location: Boston, MA
  • Installation Depth: 15′-20′
  • Ultimate Pile Capacity: 80 Kips
  • Challenge/Unique Aspect: The helicals need to support the yachts while also resisting uplift for up to 110 MPH winds. No vibration and small, minimally invasive equipment were required due to the sensitivity of the artwork in the museum. Utilities and an irrigation system needed to be avoided and the piles/anchors had to be uninstalled at the end of the exhibit.
