Due to weak, unstable soil, a house and garage needed to be supported on a deep foundation. No geotechnical report existed so piles had to respond to a torque specification of 6,000 ft. lbs. This ensured that the pilings would reach a suitable bearing strata (around 20′) that could support the load.

  • Challenge/Unique Aspect: Deep foundations were necessary in this area of Nantucket Island. Helical piles were selected as a neighbor friendly alternative to timber. In addition, helicals react to the shear strength of the soil and, through torque values, indicate where the piles need to be terminated.
