Opal Street Sewer Reconstruction, Philadelphia, PA
Reconstruction of 430 feet of Opal Street in North Philadelphia required replacing an
aging 18 inch diameter sanitary sewer.
To support the sewer line, Chance Helical Screw
Piles were specified by the Philadelphia Water Department. Helical Piles were selected
over driven timber piles due to the adjacent vibration sensitive structures, utilities and
very tight construction area.
Opal Street is only 30 feet wide (house to house line)
including a 14-foot cartway and two 8-foot sidewalks.
Installation of the vibration free 20-ton Chance Helical Screw Piles was completed using a mini-excavator.
A total of 55 helical piles were installed into the shored trench excavation from street level to
depths of 12 to 17 feet in 3 separate mobilizations.
